In August of 1995, Ryan was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Although the tumor was dangerously lodged between the cerebellum and the brain stem, the surgery to remove the tumor was successful. Unfortunately, it left Ryan paralyzed on the left side and unable to speak. Ryan had to learn everything over again, walking, talking, eating and basic tasks like opening a door or throwing a ball.

After extensive physical, occupational and speech therapy at William Beaumont Hospital, Ryan has made a full recovery. Ryan is an avid hockey fan and enjoys playing golf with his dad. He has also started playing soccer again. Throughout his illness and therapy he has quietly determined to approach each task and meet each goal with patience and practice.
